Dave Grohl Joins AC/DC For ‘Highway To Hell’ At MetLife Stadium

Foo Fighters opened for AC/DC in New Jersey, then Dave Grohl came back for the encore.

Grohl joined AC/DC for “Highway To Hell” at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford on Friday night, October 2. Fan-shot footage shows the Foo Fighters frontman sharing the stage with the Australian rock giants after his own band had already played the support slot.

One More Song At MetLife

Brian Johnson introduced the guest by telling the crowd that a friend had asked to join the band for the 1979 classic. His answer was wonderfully simple: “Yes, Dave, you can.”

Grohl came out with a guitar and spent the song moving across the huge MetLife stage, locking into the riff with Angus Young and the rest of AC/DC. There was no elaborate setup and no attempt to turn the appearance into anything bigger than it was. One famous rock fan got to play one of rock’s most famous songs with the band that made it.

The October 2 concert had already become an unusual addition to AC/DC’s itinerary. The MetLife date was rescheduled after severe weather disrupted the original plan, with the band confirming Foo Fighters as the new opener only days before the show.

Foo Fighters Stepped In Again

It was not the first time Foo Fighters had helped fill a gap on this AC/DC run. They also opened in St. Louis on September 8 when The Pretty Reckless could not make the date.

At MetLife, that practical change to the bill produced the night’s obvious talking point. Grohl has spent decades moving between drums, guitar and the front of the stage, but the sight of him grinning through “Highway To Hell” still carried the charge of somebody who knew exactly how unlikely the moment was.

Footage from the performance is now circulating online. The sound comes from phones in a stadium crowd, but the point lands clearly enough.
