Spotify Partners With ChatGPT For Personalised AI Recommendations Nobody Asked For

Share

Spotify has officially teamed up with ChatGPT to offer AI-powered music and podcast recommendations, because apparently we’ve run out of humans who can tell us what sounds good.

The new feature lets both Free and Premium Spotify users connect their accounts directly to OpenAI’s chatbot, giving them the power to ask for playlist ideas, artist suggestions, and podcast recs through simple prompts. Think “make me a playlist with Latin artists I’ve been spinning lately,” or “show me podcasts about science and innovation.” You know, the kind of thing people used to figure out by talking to an actual person, or scrolling through the app for 30 seconds.

Spotify insists the feature is optional, and users can disconnect at any time. The company also stressed that it’s not sharing songs, lyrics, or podcast content with OpenAI for training, so at least your guilty pleasure playlists are safe for now.

The move extends Spotify’s long list of tech integrations, from Alexa and Google Home to Samsung, Volvo, and Sonos. The ChatGPT link is now live in English across 145 countries on desktop and mobile (iOS and Android).

According to Spotify’s head of music Charlie Hellman, the update aligns with the company’s broader AI policy: “We’re not here to punish artists for using AI authentically and responsibly,” he said. “But we are here to stop the bad actors who are gaming the system.”

Sten Garmark, Spotify’s Senior VP and Global Head of Consumer Experience, called it a natural evolution. “Spotify’s vision has always been to be everywhere you are,” he said. “By bringing Spotify into ChatGPT, we’re creating a powerful new way for fans to connect with the artists and creators they love conversationally.”

Meanwhile, founder Daniel Ek is reportedly stepping down as CEO, just as the company adds lossless streaming, Mix With Spotify, and direct messaging to the app. The future’s loud, algorithmic, and a little unsettling.
