Nine Inch Nails Drop First New Song In Five Years For ‘TRON: Ares’ Soundtrack

Share

Nine Inch Nails are officially back in the release cycle. Their new track, ‘As Alive As You Need Me To Be’, just dropped and it’s not your standard film score cut. It’s the lead single from their upcoming soundtrack for ‘TRON: Ares’, set to hit cinemas this October.

What’s key here? This isn’t being billed as a typical Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross score, but a full blown Nine Inch Nails release. Which makes sense: ‘As Alive As You Need Me To Be’ leans hard into the band’s signature cybernetic menace, a dark, pulsing track that straddles soundtrack work and proper NIN songwriting.

Nine Inch Nails ‘As Alive As You Need Me To Be’ lyric Video:

It marks the band’s first official single in five years, after Reznor and Ross spent recent years focused on film scoring, racking up two Academy Awards along the way.

Stepping into Daft Punk’s shoes, the duo famously scored TRON: Legacy – is no small feat. According to Reznor though, that wasn’t the goal. Speaking to Empire, he revealed: “There’s not one second of orchestra in our score. It sounds precise and unpleasant at times… We spent a lot of time thinking about the undertones of what’s happening in the story, the concept of artificial life infused with feelings and emotions… their replaceability, their lack of soul.”

In other words: something eerie, synthetic and unmistakably Nine Inch Nails.

‘TRON: Ares’ lands October 10, starring Jared Leto, Jeff Bridges, Evan Peters, and Greta Lee. The soundtrack’s full release date hasn’t been confirmed, but if this lead single’s anything to go by, fans are in for a cold, digital descent.
