Gorillaz Announce New Album The Mountain Featuring Idles, Johnny Marr, Sparks & More

Gorillaz are climbing higher. Damon Albarn’s animated collective have revealed their ninth studio album, The Mountain, dropping March 20, 2026 via Kong. The first taste, ‘The Happy Dictator’ featuring Sparks, is already streaming.

The Mountain was put together everywhere from Albarn’s Studio 13 in London to Mumbai, Rajasthan, New Delhi, Varanasi, Ashgabat, Damascus, Los Angeles, Miami, and New York. That globe spanning recording approach bleeds into the record itself, which features vocals in five languages, Arabic, English, Hindi, Spanish, and Yoruba.

In true Gorillaz fashion, the guest list is stacked, including appearances from Idles, Kara Jackson, Yasiin Bey, Johnny Marr, Black Thought, Anoushka Shankar, Omar Souleyman, and more. Argentine producer Bizarrap also contributed, bringing his Latin crossover firepower to the fold.

The album will even pull from the archives, featuring posthumous contributions from Bobby Womack, Dave “Trugoy the Dove” Jolicoeur, Dennis Hopper, Mark E. Smith, Proof, and Tony Allen. For a band built on bending reality between the animated and the real, the boundary blurring feels fitting.

A Preview at Copper Box

Earlier this month, Albarn previewed The Mountain during four shows at London’s Copper Box Arena. Phones were banned, meaning no shaky fan footage exists online. For now, the album remains locked up until release day, keeping the mystery alive while driving fans mad with anticipation.

If 2023’s Cracker Island leaned into glossy pop sheen, The Mountain looks set to stretch Gorillaz’s collaborative ethos to its furthest point yet, punk energy, electronic, global textures, and voices from across time and space.
