Homer Simpson is about to make a mess of theatres all over again. Disney has confirmed a brand new Simpsons movie will land in cinemas on 23 July 2027, two decades after the dysfunctional Springfield clan’s last big screen outing.
The announcement dropped via 20th Century Studios’ Instagram, with a cheeky visual of Homer reaching for a sprinkle covered donut shaped like the number two. The caption drove the point home: ‘Homer’s coming back for seconds.’
Prime Summer Slot
The first Simpsons Movie hit in 2007, earning a massive $536 million worldwide. Its dome trapped Springfield storyline remains one of the series’ most ambitious swings outside the TV format. At the time, critic Kirk Honeycutt described the film as “caustic, irreverent, constantly amusing and a tiny bit rude,” adding that it was “almost, dare I say it, charming.”
This time around, the story is being kept under wraps, but what we do know is that Disney has shuffled its release slate to give The Simpsons a prime summer spot, one previously reserved for an untitled Marvel flick. It’ll also open against Warner Bros.’ animated musical Bad Fairies, setting the stage for a clash of pop culture titans.
37 Seasons Strong
Meanwhile, the TV juggernaut shows no signs of slowing. First appearing on The Tracey Ullman Show before spinning off in 1989, The Simpsons just launched its 37th season. The voice cast remains iconic: Dan Castellaneta (Homer), Julie Kavner (Marge), Nancy Cartwright (Bart), and Yeardley Smith (Lisa).

For fans, the real question is whether this sequel will recapture the sharp bite of the show’s golden era or lean into its later, safer rhythms. Either way, Springfield’s finest are stepping out of the lounge room and back into the cultural crossfire.
