‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Returns – New Film Out This Week

Share

The hook handed killer is back. ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’, the latest reboot of the cult slasher franchise, hits cinemas this Friday, July 18. Australian fans get it first though, hitting cinemas this Thursday, July 17!

Directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, the new film isn’t just another remake, it’s a continuation. This time, five friends find themselves trapped in the same deadly cycle as the original. After causing a fatal car accident and covering it up, they make the classic mistake, thinking secrets stay buried. A year later, someone’s out for blood. Sound familiar?

The twist? This killer knows the past. The group realises they’re not the first to be hunted and end up seeking help from two survivors of the infamous Southport Massacre of 1997. Yes, original stars Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt return, linking the new nightmare to the original saga.

Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King and Tyriq Withers lead the new cast, with appearances from Billy Campbell, Austin Nichols and model turned actor Gabbriette Bechtel.

The vibe? Classic slasher formula, but sharpened for a modern audience. It’s looking like we can expect tense alleyway stalking’s, a very guilt soaked backstory and the inevitable “who’s next?” countdown. The trailer teases call backs to the original film’s iconic scenes, but with a grimier, more brutal edge.

With horror franchises like Scream proving there’s still life in legacy slashers, ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ is banking on nostalgia mixed with fresh blood to win over both old school fans and newer audiences raised on Gen Z horror.

‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ releases exclusively in cinemas this Friday, July 18. The question is: can the past stay buried or will karma finish what it started? One things for certain, we cannot wait to find out, bring on Friday!
