Weezer brought timeless energy to When We Were Young 2025 with a hit packed set featuring Buddy Holly, Say It Ain’t So, and Island in the Sun, joined onstage by Blondshell for a rare deep cut.
There’s something timeless about Weezer that defies every trend the alternative scene has churned out over the past three decades. Playing When We Were Young on October 18, the Los Angeles icons delivered a set that felt equal parts nostalgia trip and rock solid reminder of why their catalogue still hits.
Kicking off with My Name Is Jonas, the band immediately transported the crowd back to the fuzzy glory of the ’90s, guitars crunching as thousands sang in unison. From there, it was hit after hit: Hash Pipe, Surf Wax America, and Undone – The Sweater Song keeping spirits high and mosh pits loose.
By the time Island in the Sun rolled around, arms were swaying and the whole park seemed to glow. The mood shifted into something almost euphoric, a celebration of how deeply embedded these songs are in the DNA of alternative music.
The highlight came midway through the set when Blondshell joined Weezer onstage for I Just Threw Out the Love of My Dreams, a deep cut originally released as a Pinkerton-era B-side to The Good Life. Hearing it live felt like unearthing a hidden chapter of Weezer’s history, faithful to the band’s raw ‘90s sound yet distinct enough to remind fans why their rarities still resonate.
The final stretch was a power pop onslaught: Pork and Beans, Say It Ain’t So, and Buddy Holly closing things out with the kind of joy only Weezer can conjure. Every hook felt as sharp and self aware as it did decades ago, and the crowd soaked it up.
