The Used Return To When We Were Young

Share

When We Were Young has built its empire on nostalgia, the eyeliner stained heartbeats of My Chemical Romance, the neon angst of Paramore, the pop-punk punchlines of Simple Plan. If there’s one band that captures the messy, emotional core of the entire festival though, it’s The Used.

Formed in Orem, Utah back in 2001, The Used turned vulnerability into weaponry. Their self titled debut and the gut wrenching ‘In Love and Death’ gave emo kids the language to scream about heartbreak, depression, and the reality of growing up. Bert McCracken’s delivery set them apart from their peers, they weren’t polished; they were raw nerve endings set to a soundtrack of post hardcore riffs and melodic hooks.

We caught up with Bert prior to their Australian tour earlier this month:

Two decades on, they’ve carved out a legacy as survivors. While many of their peers imploded, The Used kept evolving. From the bite of ‘Artwork’ to the soaring anthems of ‘Heartwork’, they’ve never stopped swinging between beauty and brutality. At When We Were Young, that duality is exactly why they matter.

Live, The Used are still pure catharsis. McCracken can turn crowds into choirs one moment and demolition crews the next. Get ready for circle pits during ‘Take It Away’, a collective scream on ‘All That I’ve Got’, and a festival wide therapy session when ‘The Taste of Ink’ hits the desert air. In a line-up stacked with nostalgia, The Used aren’t just a callback to 2004, they’re a reminder that emo never died, it’s still very much relevant.

When We Were Young – 2025 Line Up

At the Las Vegas Festival Grounds on October 18–19, The Used will take their place among scene royalty like My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, and Jimmy Eat World. Sharing the bill with contemporaries and younger heirs alike, their set promises to be one of the most emotionally charged moments of the weekend.

For fans, it’s a chance to scream, cry and sweat it all out, exactly what emo was always meant to be.
