PhaseOne ‘Terranova’ album interview.
From Sydney roots to storming the American scene, PhaseOne has built a reputation as one of the few producers truly fusing metalcore and EDM without compromise. His latest record ‘Terranova’, released independently in late May, takes that chaos to another galaxy, literally!
‘Terranova’ delivers a high concept hybrid record where bass drops hit like meteor strikes and riffs feel ripped straight from a mech suit rampage.
The album features Make Them Suffer and Banks Arcade, among others, collaborators PhaseOne praises for going way harder than expected. “There’s always that one verse or riff that blindsides you,” he says. “That’s what makes the record feel alive.”
Watch It Here
True to his roots, PhaseOne approached mixing like a metal producer, prioritising grit and impact over polish. Tracks like ‘Worlds Collide’ and ‘Eyes Open’ are proof, chaotic but controlled, cinematic but crushing.
He also hints at surprise influences, death metal breakdowns, post hardcore textures slipping in beneath the surface. “If you listen close, it’s not just drops and distortion. There’s layers to it.”
Outside the studio, PhaseOne keeps things unexpected. We’re talking tree planting, ten pin bowling and dreaming of a Halo meets Mad Max live show if money was no object. He’s also a big time horror fan, so you know we had to discuss what his go to movies are, as well as grabbing a recommendation!
