Fans know Matt Skiba and Jesse Michaels for their contributions to punk rock, but this summer they’ll be stepping into the spotlight for a different kind of creative expression.
Punk Rock & Paintbrushes has announced a special gallery exhibition featuring original artwork from Skiba of Alkaline Trio and Michaels of Operation Ivy, the event will take place at Chicago’s Elephant Room Gallery from July 30th through August 1st, coinciding with Lollapalooza weekend.
Located just a short walk from Grant Park, the exhibition will offer fans the opportunity to experience the visual artwork of two influential punk musicians whose creativity extends well beyond the stage.
The three day event will include an opening night reception on July 30th, followed by a special artist Q&A session on July 31st, giving attendees a chance to hear directly from both artists about their creative process and artistic journeys.

Hype builds
“I am thrilled & honored to be coming home to Chicago with Jesse Michaels. His art and music has inspired me from a young age so I was grateful to make his acquaintance and become good friends with him when I moved to the Bay Area from Chicago years ago. We are both very excited to bring our art to my hometown together,” said Skiba (per press release).
Michaels added: “I am really stoked to be doing an exhibit with Matt and Punk Rock & Paintbrushes in Chicago. I love this city, I love Matt and all his art. I have a lot of new art I am excited to put up and out.”

Almost two decades
Founded by Emily Nielsen, Punk Rock & Paintbrushes has spent nearly two decades creating opportunities for musicians to showcase their work beyond music, the organization has become known for presenting exhibitions at galleries, festivals and concert events while helping connect artists with fans through a different medium.
The Chicago exhibition follows a busy year for the collective, which has already hosted events connected to Dropkick Murphys, artist Serj Tankian and major US festivals including Sonic Temple, Welcome To Rockville and BeachLife.
For fans attending Lollapalooza or simply looking for a unique punk rock experience, the exhibition offers a rare opportunity to see another side of two influential artists whose impact on punk culture continues to resonate decades after their musical beginnings.
