Rare Wayne Static Footage From 1999 Surfaces During New Documentary Prep

Previously unseen footage of Wayne Static has surfaced, offering a rare look at the Static-X frontman at the exact moment his career was beginning to accelerate.

The footage was uncovered by filmmaker Matt Zane, who is in the early stages of preparing a documentary centered on the relationship between Wayne Static and Tera Wray.

Although the project isn’t officially entering production until January, Zane has already begun digitizing hours of old archival tapes filmed with the couple. During that process, one tape immediately stood out.

Marked only with a handwritten ‘1999’, the cassette turned out to contain a previously unreleased interview with Wayne Static, filmed shortly after Static-X completed their first run on Ozzfest 1999. The timing captures Wayne in transition, just as the band’s profile was rising and their industrial-metal assault was starting to break through to a wider audience.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Zane said. “It was raw footage from the first time I officially filmed Wayne. Almost 20 minutes of him, right when everything was starting to happen. The tape is over 25 years old, and it still plays.”

While the upcoming documentary focuses primarily on Wayne’s relationship with Wray, the newly discovered interview predates that chapter of his life by several years. Even so, Zane believes the material adds important context to Wayne’s story beyond the aggressive onstage persona fans remember.

“There are a few things in there that really show Wayne’s depth as a person and his sense of humour,” Zane explained. “It adds context, and I’ll definitely be including some of it.”

Footage from Static-X’s early years is scarce, especially material that hasn’t already circulated among fans or been reused in retrospectives, this discovery offers a more intimate snapshot of Wayne before the pressures of fame, excess, and expectation fully set in.

Zane has confirmed that more details about the documentary will be revealed as production moves forward. For now, the above short preview of the newly uncovered footage has been shared, giving fans a brief but meaningful glimpse of Wayne Static at a pivotal point in his journey.
