Filmmaker Matt Zane is producing an unauthorized 2026 documentary exploring the love and tragedy of Static-X’s Wayne Static and his wife Tera Wray, featuring unreleased music.
A new unauthorized documentary is set to explore the intense and tragic relationship between Static-X frontman Wayne Static and his wife Tera Wray, and it’s already generating controversy before filming even begins.
Filmmaker Matt Zane, a longtime friend and collaborator of the couple, revealed that production will begin in January 2026 alongside a crowdfunding campaign to support the project. Zane says he feels a personal responsibility to tell their story the way they wanted it told.

‘Most people are unaware that I knew Wayne for about 14 years, and I actually knew his wife Tera before him,’ Zane explained. ‘We were all close, and I worked on every project he did after leaving Static-X.’
Zane directed all of Wayne’s solo videos, including Pighammer Promo, Assassins Of Youth (below), and his final video Noise Revolution featuring DMC. He said the new documentary expands on an unfinished series he had been developing with the couple before Wayne’s death in 2014.
‘I know this is something Wayne and Tera wanted to get done, and they wanted me to do it. I feel I owe them this — to tell their story the way they wanted it told,’ Zane said.
The project will also include previously unreleased music written with Wayne. ‘There’s about an EP’s worth of material Wayne and I recorded for a movie Tera was doing, but his label stepped in and stopped it. Some of those ideas ended up on Pighammer, but the rest has been sitting in my archives. I’m revisiting it now and will finish some of it with help from A.I. technology.’
No family involment
Zane confirmed that neither the families of Wayne and Tera nor the original members of Static-X are involved in the project.
Wayne Static died in 2014 from a fatal mix of alcohol and prescription drugs. Tera Wray, who struggled with depression following his death, took her own life two years later. Their story remains one of the most heart breaking chapters in the metal world, and Zane says he’s ready to bring it to light.
