The families of Wayne Static and Tera Wray have made it clear they’re not standing by while an unauthorised documentary about the couple gains traction.
After filmmaker Matt Zane revealed plans to crowdfund a project in January 2026, one he described as an exploration of their ‘intense and often turbulent relationship’, both families have stepped forward to shut it down.
Their joint message, shared by Wayne’s sister Aimee Wells Pittman, states their “strenuous objection” to any attempt to portray Wayne Wells (Wayne Static) or Tera Lents (Tera Wray) without permission, and the language leaves little room for interpretation.

The families warn that “any behind the scenes footage from music videos, adult film sets, concerts, house parties, developmental projects, reality TV pilots, private photos,” or any use of Wayne or Tera’s likenesses will trigger “the appropriate legal response.”
In their view, the darker moments of the couple’s lives have already been documented enough, particularly through the 2013 ‘Assassins Of Youth’ video and Static-X’s 2023 clip for ‘Stay Alive’.
Evil Disco – The Rise, Fall, And Regeneration Of Static-X
They also highlight Static-X’s upcoming official documentary, Evil Disco – The Rise, Fall, And Regeneration Of Static-X, which they say “devotes the necessary context to Wayne’s life, musical legacy, and tragic final years.”
The families aren’t dismissing the idea of new material entirely, though they insist it must be handled ethically:
“If Mr. Zane is in possession of any additional rare or unseen footage that could contribute to the celebration of Wayne’s life and legacy, we kindly ask him to share the footage with our families.”
No AI
What they are rejecting outright is the use of AI: any replication of Wayne’s voice or release of unreleased recordings must be approved by the estate.
Zane, who worked closely with Wayne and directed several solo videos, claims he’s simply trying to finish a project the couple once hoped to make with him.
He’s floated the possibility of revisiting unreleased tracks, potentially with AI, a move the families clearly oppose.
With both Wayne and Tera gone, in 2014 and 2016, respectively, their loved ones say their focus now is protecting the pair’s legacy while supporting Static-X’s ongoing efforts to honor Wayne’s work with integrity.
