After nearly three decades behind the kit, Matt Cameron has officially stepped away from Pearl Jam, ending a chapter that helped define the band’s live energy and rhythmic backbone.
Cameron joined the Seattle legends in 1998 after Soundgarden initially disbanded, shared a heartfelt message confirming his departure:
‘After 27 fantastic years, I have taken my final steps down the drum riser for the mighty Pearl Jam… It’s been an incredible journey. More to follow. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.’

The band followed with their own tribute, calling Cameron a ‘singular and true powerhouse’ whose impact on the group stretches back even further. Before becoming their full time drummer, Cameron laid down drums for Pearl Jam demos as early as 1990, while still active with Soundgarden. That early collaboration blossomed into a permanent gig following Jack Irons’ departure, cementing Cameron as a vital piece of the band’s evolution through albums like ‘Binaural’, ‘Riot Act’ and ‘Gigaton’.
Pearl Jam’s statement was filled with love:
‘It was a deeply important chapter for our group and we wish him well always. He will be deeply missed and is forever our friend in art and music.’

There’s no word yet on who will take over drum duties moving forward, or whether this will impact the band’s upcoming commitments. One thing is clear though: Cameron’s departure marks the end of a monumental era for Pearl Jam. An era fuelled by his unmistakable finesse, thunder and versatility behind the kit.
Fans will be watching closely for what comes next. As Cameron hinted, there’s ‘more to follow’, whether that means a solo project or something entirely new remains to be seen. One thing’s for sure, Cameron’s legacy as one of rock’s most revered and adaptive drummers is already well and truly locked in.
Stay tuned.
