Gerard Way’s New Band The Mock-Ups Drops Debut Single ‘I Wanna Know Your Name’

Share

Gerard Way just won’t slow down, not that we want him to! Out of nowhere, the My Chemical Romance frontman has pulled the curtain back on The Mock-Ups, a brand new project that’s already making noise with their debut single, ‘I Wanna Know Your Name’.

The band’s reveal was as sudden as a stage dive. Gauzy Records announced their signing on Friday via Instagram, and now, within days, the single is here. Alongside Way on vocals and bass, the line-up features Fender’s Michael Schulz (guitar), Kevin Bivona of The Interrupters on keys and production, Jesse Bivona on drums, and Aimee Interrupter adding backing vocals.

‘I Wanna Know Your Name’ leans on a nostalgic punk ‘77 vibe while carrying Way’s unmistakable voice front and centre. It’s no emo anthem, but the DNA is familiar, raucous, urgent, and just a little twisted.

The recording also carries a ghostly weight. Engineering credits list Doug McKean, the late producer and engineer who worked closely with My Chemical Romance on Welcome to the Black Parade, Danger Days, and Way’s solo debut Hesitant Alien. McKean passed away in 2022, suggesting The Mock-Ups have been brewing quietly for years before this surprise drop.

Get Your Pre Order On

Vinyl pre orders for the single are already live through Gauzy Records, tagged under “punk rock, rock & roll, ‘77”. Whether this is the start of a full record or just a one off isn’t clear. What is clear is that Way’s plate is beyond stacked, between the ongoing My Chemical Romance world tour, countless creative side quests, and now The Mock-Ups, he’s proving once again that retirement just isn’t in his blood. Would we want it any other way? Not at all!
