Alt-metal icons Deftones new single, ‘My Mind Is a Mountain’, has been unveiled, the first track lifted from their upcoming album Private Music. Which we now know is heading our way August 22, 2025. The song, equal parts eerie and intimate, arrives with a minimalist visualiser and confirms that Chino Moreno and co. are once again swerving expectations with a mood driven approach that leans into sonic tension rather than full blown fury.
A dreamlike descent into darkness
‘My Mind Is a Mountain’ builds slowly, layering ghostly falsetto vocals over a thick, pulsing bassline. Guitar tones bend and dissolve like heat haze, while Abe Cunningham’s drumming keeps the track grounded in Deftones’ signature slow groove rhythm. There’s no scream, no drop. Just a brooding atmosphere that draws you in with dread.
It’s an approach that recalls moments from White Pony and Koi No Yokan, but with even more restraint. This is Deftones at their most meditative, reflective, raw and a little bit haunted.
Deftones My Mind Is a Mountain – A Snake In The Grass
The visualiser that accompanies the song is deceptively simple: a deep purple screen bearing the image of a coiled snake, symbolic, restrained and strikingly still. No glitch, no chaos, just quiet menace. It suits the song’s emotional weight, letting the track speak for itself.

‘Private Music’ album lands August 22
The new Deftones album, Private Music, is available to pre-order and stream now, with exclusive merch and formats via the band’s official store. If this first single is anything to go by, the full record could be one of the band’s most inward looking and personal releases to date.
As always, Deftones continue to evolve without explanation. That’s exactly why we keep following them into the dark, because no one else does heavy quite like Deftones. Bring on August 22.
