Former Amity Affliction vocalist Ahren Stringer has reportedly been hospitalized after what his bandmates described as a “serious and unexpected emergency.” The news arrived via Self Checkout’s official Instagram page, just a day before the band’s debut single ‘Death Notes’ is scheduled to drop.
The post reads:
“We really wanted to actively engage in celebrating the release of ‘Death Notes’ with you all in real time. Unfortunately, we are supporting Ahren [Stringer] in hospital after a serious and unexpected emergency, so our priority has shifted to his health and recovery. We hope you enjoy the big day enough for all of us, your support means the world xxx”
For fans, the message hit hard, instead of celebrating new music, the Self Checkout community found itself rallying around Stringer, with well wishes and supportive comments flooding in.
Self Checkout, fronted by Stringer alongside ex-Volumes member Yung Yogi (aka Gus Farias) had been building momentum toward the release of ‘Death Notes.’ Speaking to Blunt earlier this year, Stringer described the project as an “eclectic mix” of genres, jokingly calling it a “cosmic gumbo.” Both Stringer and Yogi also made it clear that the band was designed with their mental health in mind, serving as a kind of healing process after turbulent years in their respective careers.

The timing makes the announcement all the heavier. ‘Death Notes’ is still set to release, but instead of being the celebratory launch the duo envisioned, it now arrives in the shadow of Stringer’s health situation.

At this stage, no further details about the nature of the emergency have been shared. What’s clear is that the priority, for the band and for fans is Stringer’s recovery. For an artist who’s weathered plenty of storms both on stage and off, this latest chapter comes with the hope of a full and fast rebound.
