Riot Games just dropped a cinematic that’s as heavy as it is heartfelt. The gaming giant has released a new trailer for its upcoming two on two fighting game, ‘2XKO’, soundtracked by a blistering solo track from Spiritbox frontwoman Courtney LaPlante. The song, ‘Ties That Bind’, was written specifically for the game, and it hits just as hard as you’d expect.
The cinematic pairs League of Legends favourites Ekko and Ahri as they square off against Yasuo and Warwick, blending Riot’s signature stylised combat with emotional storytelling and, of course, LaPlante’s unmistakable vocals. It’s a full scale showcase of Riot’s knack for merging gaming spectacle with music that actually slaps.
According to the studio, the track delivers a “powerful and anthemic soundscape into an epic, soaring finale for players.” ‘Ties That Bind’ officially dropped today to promote ‘2XKO’s open beta, which launches tomorrow for PC players, giving fans a chance to test the mechanics, offer feedback, and get a taste of what’s to come. A console release is expected later, though Riot hasn’t confirmed when.
LaPlante joins an impressive roster of musicians working with Riot. Just last month, Polyphia released an original track that now serves as the game’s official theme song. Riot’s history with big name collaborations runs deep, think Imagine Dragons’ ‘Warriors’, Lil Nas X, Porter Robinson, and Twenty One Pilots, all acts that have helped cement the developer’s music game as strong as its esports one.
Outside of this project, LaPlante’s been anything but idle. Spiritbox dropped a new album in March, and in September, she featured on ‘End of You’ alongside Poppy and Amy Lee of Evanescence, a powerhouse trifecta for alt-metal fans.
With ‘Ties That Bind’, LaPlante once again proves she’s one of heavy music’s most versatile voices, bridging the gap between breakdowns and boss fights.
