Henry Cavill Joins The Pride In Amazon’s Live Action Voltron Reboot

Share

The lions are loose and Amazon’s betting big on bot nostalgia with a live action Voltron flick starring none other than Henry Cavill. Yep, Geralt, Superman, and now King Alfor.

Directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber (Red Notice, Skyscraper) and backed by Amazon MGM Studios, the upcoming film resurrects the ‘80s mecha icon for a new generation only this time, it’s live-action, bigger budget, and headed straight for Prime Video.

Filmed in Australia, Starring Everyone

Production wrapped in April 2025, with the film shot across Village Roadshow Studios on the Gold Coast. It reportedly injected over $100 million into the Queensland economy, so yeah, this one’s got teeth.

The cast is stacked:

  • Daniel Quinn-Toye leads the pack as Shiro
  • Henry Cavill plays King Alfor
  • Sterling K. Brown takes on King Zarkon
  • Rita Ora steps into the role of Witch Haggar
  • John Harlan Kim as Keith
  • Alba Baptista as Allura
  • Samson Kayo as Hunk

It’s a mix of prestige actors, rising stars, and curveball choices perfect for a franchise that’s always been a little bit off kilter in the best way.

So, What’s the Plot?

If you somehow dodged Voltron: Defender of the Universe as a kid, here’s the gist: five pilots command robotic lions that form one giant mega robot to defend the cosmos from evil. It’s part space opera, part kaiju chaos, with just enough emotional baggage to keep things interesting.

Thurber’s take is expected to lean into the grandiosity, but Amazon’s pushing hard for heart too, especially with Cavill as the fallen royal guiding the Voltron crew from beyond. Expect cosmic warfare, political fallout, and (hopefully) a healthy dose of neon-slick retro homage.

Release Date?

TBA, but it’s locked for Amazon Prime Video, bypassing cinemas entirely. Bold move, or just 2025 streaming logic in action? Either way, it’s one of Amazon’s biggest IP plays to date.

Whether you grew up shouting ‘Form Voltron!’ at your TV or you’re just here for the cast list, this reboot’s got weight behind it. The only question is: can it deliver the heat in a post Dune, post Transformers world?

Keep an eye on this one, because if they pull it off, it’s gonna roar.
