Karl Urban looks right at home in the first teaser for Mortal Kombat II, stepping into the shades of action star Johnny Cage with that familiar smirk fans have been waiting for. Fresh off tearing up screens as Billy Butcher in The Boys, Urban leans into the cocky energy Cage is known for, mugging for the camera in a teaser that focuses on Johnny’s self obsessed movie career.
Urban joins a returning cast of fighters including Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, and Joe Taslim as Bi-Han. This time around, the lineup expands with Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, and Damon Herriman stepping in as Quan Chi. Hiroyuki Sanada returns as Hanzo Hasashi, aka Scorpion, while Martyn Ford looms large as villain Shao Kahn.

Plot-wise, it’s the usual setup: following the events of the 2021 reboot, Shao Kahn is gearing up to invade Earthrealm, and thunder god Raiden (played again by Tadanobu Asano) is assembling a fresh roster of fighters to push back the threat. First recruit? Johnny Cage himself.
Director Simon McQuoid returns behind the camera, with a script from Jeremy Slater. You can expect brutal fights, over the top fatalities and plenty of fan service for those raised on both the games and the 90s films.
Mortal Kombat II hits cinemas October 24, aiming to build on the success of the 2021 movie. Whether it nails the balance of gore and fun remains to be seen, but with Urban chewing scenery as Johnny Cage, it’s shaping up to be a ride worth taking.
For now, watch the first teaser (maybe a couple of times) and get ready to test your might all over again, October will be here before you know it. As will Jonny Cage!
