The Avatar: Fire And Ash Trailer Offers Plenty Of Both

Share

James Cameron isn’t messing around. The new trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash drops us headfirst into a full scale war on Pandora, and this time, the stakes feel volcanic.

After the semi recap nature of The Way of Water, Fire and Ash wastes no time reminding us we’re neck deep in the Na’vi’s resistance. Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) are back with the whole Sully brood, things are getting darker though. A new Na’vi clan, the Mangkwan, or Ash People are stepping into the fray. They’re not the peaceful, tree hugging types we met in the original. These ash covered warriors are volatile, and their allegiance is murky at best.

Meanwhile, the undead in an Avatar body Colonel Quaritch (Stephen Lang) is still on a mission to end Jake for good. Oh, and yes, there are sky jellyfish now. Classic Cameron!

The returning cast is stacked: Sigourney Weaver is still around as Kiri, Kate Winslet and Cliff Curtis reprise their roles from the water tribe, and we’ve got newcomers like David Thewlis and Oona Chaplin stirring the pot. With over 20 major characters in play, it’s clear Cameron’s swinging big with this one.

The trailer is pure spectacle, llava flows, jungle warfare and those eerie bioluminescent vibes only Pandora can deliver. As usual, the man behind Aliens and Terminator 2 is blending blockbuster chaos with hyper-detailed worldbuilding. Love it or hate it, Avatar continues to be cinema’s most out there flex.

Avatar: Fire and Ash hits US cinemas Friday, December 19.

Oh, and yeah, if you’ve got a theory about the Na’vi’s true origin? It’s just about time to dust it off. This ride looks ready to rewrite the Pandora playbook, with a run time of 3 hours and 12 minutes there’s going to be a lot to unpack.
