Doobie, the Columbus, Ohio native who carved his name into the underground hip hop world, is now taking his rock roots centre stage. On May 30, he dropped his first ever rock album, ‘Give ’Em Hell Until You Get to Heaven’, a raw, unflinching dive into the sounds that shaped him growing up, Alice In Chains, Nirvana, Metallica. This isn’t some half hearted crossover. Doobie’s gone all in, crafting a record that’s as gritty as his story.
The album features 12 tracks blending grunge grit, southern swagger and arena sized choruses. Singles like ‘Worth A Shot’, ‘Early Bird Gets the Whiskey’ and ‘Until I Get to Heaven’ show off his knack for melody without losing that dark, whiskey soaked edge. There’s even a ripping cover of Danzig’s ‘Mother’, proof he’s serious about wearing his influences on his sleeve.
Backing him up are guests like Nothing More’s Jonny Hawkins, Yelawolf and Josey Scott (formerly of Saliva), a crew that adds firepower without overshadowing Doobie’s voice. Lyrically, this is Doobie at his most honest, grappling with ego death, sobriety and the long road from self destruction to self acceptance. “It’s about me unapologetically killing my own ego and being my true self,” he says and that vibe bleeds through every riff and chorus.
Fresh off the album’s release, Doobie made waves at Nashville Superspeedway, partnering with Revolver and NASCAR driver Nick Leitz, and opening up to End Overdose about his recovery journey.
‘Give ’Em Hell Until You Get to Heaven’ marks the start of a new chapter for an artist who’s always done things his way. Stream it now, this is Doobie at full throttle, no filter.
