Deryck Whibley Says He’d Love To Take Acoustic SUM 41 Songs On The Road

Deryck Whibley is hinting that SUM 41’s breakup isn’t the end of his relationship with their music, not by a long shot.

During a backstage chat with James Wilson-Taylor of Rock Sound at Vans Warped Tour in Orlando, the long time frontman revealed he’s been quietly building a new musical lane that leans less on volume and more on vulnerability.

Whibley has been keeping busy this past year, juggling his Walking Disaster clothing brand, a bestselling memoir, and unexpected guest spots with artists as different as the Jonas Brothers and Avril Lavigne. Even with that full schedule though, he hasn’t stopped writing.

“I play guitar every day,” he said. “I have no plans or I don’t know what I’m gonna do with music, but I play guitar every day, I write music every day and I have a stockpile of songs and music that are just kind of sitting there that eventually I’m gonna wanna do some music.”

When asked if any of that material might end up going to other artists, he admitted the idea doesn’t come naturally. “I’m a very selfish writer,” he said. “When I write something I like, it’s hard to give it away.”

The best bit?

Whibley revealed he already has a full acoustic record finished, a collection of SUM 41 songs reworked into stripped back versions. Better yet? It’s something he wants to bring to the stage. “I’d like to do an acoustic tour of SUM 41 songs,” he said, “I have an acoustic record… that may come out sometime soon. And I’d like to go tour that, but, again, there’s no plans for any of it.”

Whibley’s post SUM 41 world is already packed with collaborations including Iggy Pop, Avril Lavigne, Tommy Lee, and more, years behind the boards as a producer and mixer, and now a bestselling book chronicling addiction, survival, and healing. With SUM 41 now in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, an acoustic chapter feels like a natural, and surprisingly intimate next move.
