Deftones have followed last month’s brooding ‘My Mind Is A Mountain‘ with a fresh strike of firepower, their new single ‘milk of the madonna’. It’s the second taste of their upcoming album Private Music, and it’s anything but gentle.
Opening with Chino Moreno’s spectral calm before erupting into volcanic intensity, ‘milk of the madonna’ marries the band’s trademark ethereal textures with a sense of impending apocalypse. “Holy ghost, I’m on fire,” Moreno repeats like a mantra, painting vivid images of bloody rain, quaking winds and tongues of flame in the night. It’s the kind of apocalyptic poetry Deftones excel at, sensual, unsettling, and impossible to shake once it’s under your skin.
Deftones ‘milk of the madonna’ Audio Video
Recorded with producer Nick Raskulinecz, Private Music is being framed as a spiritual successor to Ohms and Koi No Yokan, promising a mix of shimmering atmospherics and crushing heaviness. Long time fans will find the DNA familiar, but there’s an urgency here that feels sharpened by the five year wait since their last full length.

The new record lands August 22 via Reprise Records, the same day the band launches the second leg of their North American tour in Vancouver. Phantogram, IDLES, and Barbarians of California will join them on select dates, while Deftones will also break from their own run to support System Of A Down for two shows in Toronto this September.
‘Private Music’ First New Album In Five Years
It’ll be the band’s first full length since 2020’s Ohms, and judging by these early singles, the new era is going to be loud. For now, ‘milk of the madonna’ keeps the anticipation simmering at a slow burn, a reminder that Deftones don’t just release songs, they release atmospheres. This one is thick with smoke and lit by a dangerous glow.
